It was a windy cool June evening… My family and I took the 30 minute drive from our house out to Manly. I have never been to Manly to shoot before but from what I have seen and heard it’s a great spot to get out to. We got out there for sunset, my little one fell asleep in the car so my wife did me a solid and stayed in the car while I went on my way to find some great shots.

It’s a beautiful little spot the sun was setting to the west over my left shoulder, I set up my tripod and looked for the right composition wanting to capture the boats, the lights as twilight to effect.

Nature threw so many gorgeous colours at me, the blue and purple was gorgeous. The orange and yellow was spectacular. I find it amazing as we have twilight because Earth has an atmosphere. Some light scatters through small particles in the atmosphere – so there’s still some light in the sky even after the sun has gone down.

How cool is that!?

I used a host of long exposure snaps at f/8 and ISO 100 trying different exposure time. I found 3-6 seconds worked the best and the results were really pleasing I found. After about 30-40 minutes for snapping away to my little hearts content, the sun was all but gone as was the natural light, so I packed up my tripod, my camera and made my way back to the car where my daughter was wide awake. We decided to make our way to get some fish and chips, because that’s what you do when you’re by the sea!

I hope you enjoy this snap as much as I enjoyed creating it!
